So I was told last time I got my oil changed that my car had a slight oil leak. I check the oil level regularly, look at the ground if it’s sat for a couple days...never seen anything resembling a leak. Now, I’m taking my car in next week for a TSB anyways, so I told the rep on the phone that I was advised that there may be an oil leak. She paused and said, “did they tell you where the oil leak was?” I said, “Well, no, and if they did I’ve forgotten. But I guess if you could check any obvious places...” I thought it weird that she was asking a customer which component had failed to cause the leak. She goes on, “Well, it’s tricky if they didn’t say where the oil may be leaking from” (code for our technicians aren’t gonna wanna look for your ghost oil leak). Then she asked, “Did they mention if the leak was coming from the engine area?” ................................. Oh. I couldn’t help myself. “I don’t think that they told me that exactly but I’d expect that to be the only place motor oil would be leaking from. It isn’t like motor oil would be leaking from my trunk.” And as soon as that came out of my mouth I felt like an ass. I didn’t mean to be one, but there I sat in all my asshaberdashery. I was that guy. Now I feel kinda bad, but I’m not sure I want them coming near the mechanicals of my car. I guess this was only after my call was knocked around like a pinball for twenty minutes (tells problem, oh please hold, repeat), so maybe that was the source of my snark.

That was justified. And someone needs to put the car in the air and inspect.

Sometimes it just happens. I usually try to be pleasant with CSRs because no matter how much the company has screwed up its not their fault. But sometimes the sarcasm just slips out

One time I actually did notice an oil leak under the rear of my car. Turns out the spare oil canister had busted and it seeped through the floor.

“Please don’t feel like you need to convince me that you don’t know anything...”
The worst line I ever said to a CSR. It sits in my brain as a reminder of man as a fallen species.

You have gear oil in rear diffs, rear axles seal will leak oil, transmissions will leak oil out the back output shaft, so.....

Then she asked, “Did they mention if the leak was coming from the engine area?”
Yea there’s really no intelligent reply to that, that doesn’t make you sound like the idiot, especially after you told that that you don’t remember them saying where it leaked from. Stupid questions get stupid answers. That’s just how it is.
Now if it was a Fiero, then the trunk area and the engine area could be roughly the same...

A slight change in your wording and you could be a comedian.

Plot twist: Though it seemed like oil from the engine area, it was blinker fluid from the reservoir behind one of the headlights. They just didn’t way which one.

nope, that was brought on entirely by the other end of the phone. A follow up question to “I don’t know where it was coming from” is stupid to begin with. That was 100% earned.

I did specify motor oil after all. You know, for the motor.
